Bruges (Brugge, 120000 hab.), capital of the province of West-Vlaanderen, kept intact its aspect of the city of the Middle Ages. It is one of the jewels of Belgium. Its name would come from the old Scandinavian "Bryggja", which means landing stage.

Very close, the first count de Flandre, Baudouin (IXè century), made build a castle, around whose the city developed very quickly. In XIIIè and XIVè centuries, the residence became not only the most significant city of Flanders, but one of the shopping centres most significant of Europe. The gold "âge "of Bruges was XVè century, when the dukes of Burgundy resided at it and that y were born the chiefs-d..uvre from the Flemish school.

It is the nature which put an end to this rise: since XVè century, the arm of the sea which connected Bruges to the North Sea, Zwin, ensabla little by little and all the attempts to save the city failed. Towards the end of XVIè century, Bruges was practically une"ville died ". In XXè century, the port of Zeebrugge, built in 1896-1907, which is connected in Bruges by a channel of 12 km, to the city its economic importance returned again.

 
Visit of Bruges  
We begin our walk to the
Central Station [1] and follow broad Koning Albertlaan, which crosses a pretty park, until the
Zand [ 2 ], great place surrounded by old houses. On right-hand side, by Zuidzandstraat, one arrives in front of the cathedral
Saint-Sauveur (St-Salvator) [ 3 ]. A first church is attested there towards 960. the
oldest parts of the current building date from XIIe century. See the stalls of the ch.ur, in oak (XIVè century), and a pulpit of XVIIè - By Steenstraat one continues towards the
Markt [ 4 ], (Large places) dominated by a Belfry of the 83 m, most beautiful of the country. It was high in XIIIè century to mark the independence of Bruges, and the splendid chime, which made soon its world-famous personality, there was added to XVIè century (11 bells) and to XVIIIè century (47 bells). Of his higher platform (366 steps) there is a very beautiful sight on the city. The recitals of chimes take place during the summer months Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday of 11h45 with 12h30. The belfry crowns the "markets", built in XIIIè century (transformed in XVIè century). To see the pretty court.
In Markt is a monument with the Masters of corporation Breydel and of Corninck, who drove out the French of Flanders in 1302. - A is place, the Palate of the provincial Government (neogothic) and the central Post office. In the west, Cranenburg (entirely restored) where, in 1488, Maximilien 1st was imprisoned by the middle-class men of Bruges during three weeks, until A what it accepts their conditions. Every year, the Ascension Day, the sumptuous procession of Saint-Sang takes its departure there. At side, in the south-west of the place, the very beautiful Gothic Town hall is (1376-1420).
A little on the left, grafts it, picturesque building rebirth (1535), then the Law courts (Gerechtsho) with its famous marble chimney (1525).
Of Burg, to pass by the lane between the Town hall and graft it, to cross the channel (rei), then to turn left by Steenhouwersdijk and Groene rei according to thus part of the old belt of the city. One will notice with number 8-12 the very beautiful hospice"Pelikan "; To reconsider its steps along the channel and to cross Huidenvettersplein towards Rozenhoedkaai: splendid sight on the belfry and the church Our-Darne [ 9 ]; then, a little further, several landing stages for the walk in boat on the channels (recommended).
To follow the channel on the quay which is called Dyver. On left,
Museum Groeninge [ 6 ] with a remarkable collection of Flemish painting: works of Van der Goes, van Eyck, Gerard David, Rogier of Pasture, Memling, Bosch, etc.
A side, Museum Arents [ 7) which has a good collection d..uvres of the English painter Frank Brangwyn (1857-1956), who was born there, as well as old sights of Bruges and a collection of potteries, coppers and tins. - A side, one of the most beautiful house of Bruges,
Palate Gruuthuse [ 8 ] of XVè century, the old residence of the Gruuthuse lords where the English kings Edouard IV (1471) and Charles II (1656) had found refuge. A museum was arranged there, with a rich person collection of laces, ceramics, weapons and pieces of furniture. - Behind the Gruuthuse Palate the
Church Our-Lady [ 9 ] is (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwenkerk), dating in major part of XIIIè century. At the interior, a significant work of Michel-Angel, "the Virgin and the child" (1503, at the bottom of the right side), and mausoleums of Charles the Bold one and his Marie daughter of Burgundy. A little further,
Museum Memling [ 10 ]. It is placed in the old St-Jean Hospital founded in XIIè century. The old chapter room is devoted to the Memling painter, with his most significant work, the "mounting of holy Ursule" (1489).
After the museum, to turn right in Katelijnestraat, while crossing the small bridge on the channel: to follow the second street on the right, to cross Walplein, to lead on the right to Wijngaardstraat and Wijngaardplein, on idyllic the Minne-toilets ("the lake of love") the inner harbour of Bruges at the Average Age To cross the bridge to go to the
Béguinage [ 11 ] (Begijnhof) founded in 1245 by the Marguerite countess of Constantinople. One arranged there a small museum which illustrates the life of the béguines, these pious women who - without being chocolate éclairs - carried out a life of chastity and Christian community. Currently, it is inhabited by Bénédictines.

Windmills [ 15 ]. only remained intact of the 25 of XVIè century. - All close the
Museum Guido Gezelle [ 16 ]. arranged in the native house of the poet and Flemish priest (1830-1899). Un little on the right.
Guild of the Archers of Saint Sebastien [ 17), Stijn Streuvelstraat, with a significant collection of paintings and goldsmithery.
While always following the channel, one arrives at the 3è carries city, the
Door of Sainte-Croix [ 18 ] (Kruispoort), where the museum devoted to the military history of Bruges and Belgium is. More in the south,
Door of Ghent [ 19 ] (Gentpoort); one returns towards Minnewater, then at the Station.
