Liege (Luik, in allem. Lüffich, 240 000 hab. agglomeration
500 000 hab.), is the capital of the province of the same name and all
the Walloon part of the country. This significant industrial and commercial
town is in a site ravissant with the confluence of Ourthe and the Meuse,
surrounded by hills. It is an ideal starting point for excursions in
the Ardennes and the Valley of the Meuse.
According to the tradition, Liege was founded after the assassination
of Saint Lambert into 705, like place of pilgrimage. In 721 the archbishop's
palace was transferred there, and since XIVè century, Liége
was the capital of an ecclesiastical principality attached to the Germanic
Empire. Violent fights oppose the prince-bishops and the corporations
during all the Average Age. One of the bloodiest events was the conquest
of the city by the duke of Burgundy Jean without Peur in 1408, where
it would have made kill 15 000 inhabitants the arrival of the French
revolutionary troops under the Dumouriez General in 1792 marks the end
