843. At the time of the division of the empire of Charlemagne at the time of the Treaty of Verdun, the provinces in the west of the Scheldt return in Francie Western, those in the east, Francie median of the Lothaire emperor 1st (Lotharingie). 870. At the time of the division of the median kingdom by the treaty
of Meerssen, the area in the east of the Scheldt returns to the Eastern
kingdom: it is integrated into the duchy of Low Lotharingie (Low-Lorraine).
A Little HISTORY The areas of current Belgium were inhabited dice the
paleolithic one. It is towards 500 front. J-c which place had the invasion
of the Belgians, Celts coming from the North-West of Germanie. During five centuries the country belongs to the Roman

1519-56. Charles Quint, grandson of Maximilien 1st, institutes courts of enquiry to fight against Protestantism. Economic apogee of Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. 1477. Charles the Bold one, duke of Burgundy, takes
évêché of Liége. His/her Marie daughter marries
the future Maximilien emperor 1st, thus bringing to the private fields
of the house of Habsbourg all the current territory of Belgium and Luxembourg

1905-12.
Guillaume IV, large-duke of Luxembourg. 1908. Congo is bequeathed to Belgium and becomes colony (until 1960). 1909-34. Albert 1st, King of the Belgians. 1912-19. Marie Adelheid, large-duchess of Luxembourg. 1914-18. The Germans occupy Belgium and Luxembourg in violation of Belgian neutrality. Albert 1st organizes resistance and with the Release in 1918 the vote for all promises. The treaty of Versailles allots the districts of Eupen and Malmédy to Belgium. Luxembourg leaves Zollverein. 1865-1909. Léopold II, king of the Belgians, in 1885 it melts
the State independent of Congo, placed under its personal direction.

1810. Holland and Belgium are annexed to the French Empire. 1792. A French revolutionary army occupies Belgium and, in 1795, Luxembourg. 1795. Belgium, évêché of Liege and the Netherlands are joined together by the French in a Republic batave. Austria recognizes their loss in 1797 by the signature of the Peace of Campo Formio. Luxembourg is annexed in France while becoming the Department of the Forests. |

The Congress of Vienna creates the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, controlled in personal union by Guillaume 1"' of Nassau-Orange (the kingdom includes/understands the current Belgium and Netherlands): but Luxembourg belongs to the Germanic Confederation and receives a Prussian garrison. 1830. The linguistic and denominational tensions are at the origin
of a popular rising against the Dutchmen. In 1831 Belgium creates an
independent kingdom, recognized in 1839 by the Netherlands: the Walloon
part of Luxembourg is annexed and becomes Belgian province. |

1567-73.
Repression counters the Protestants under the Pile cluster: in 1568 the
heads of resistance, the counts d' Egmont and of Hornes, are carried out. 1579. The seven provinces of north (current Netherlands) form the Union of Utrecht. It will be recognized like independent state in 1648. The catholic provinces of the south remain Spanish. 1596-1622. Under the regency of the archduke Albert (Albrecht), the Spanish provinces take part in the apogee of the era baroque. 1659. Beginning of the wars annexationists of Louis XIV. 1934-51. Léopold III, king of the Belgians.
1940. May 10 the German troops enter to Belgium and to Luxembourg. The Belgian government takes refuge in England; the king capitulates on May 28 and enters in captivity. The large-ducal family and the Luxembourg government go in exile. 1944. Release of Belgium and Luxembourg by the allied troops. 1948. Customs union and economic enters Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg ("the Benelux countries") 1949. Accession of Belgium to the Pact of the North Atlantic. 1951. Abdication of Léopold III; his/her Baudouin son reaches the throne. 1952. The town of Luxembourg becomes the siége European Coal and Steel Community (CEGA). Birth of Jean-Luc Funck (October 23th, 1952). Birth of Christian Denis (October 24th, 1952). 1957. Signature of the treaties of Rome (Common Market). 1964. Accession of the large-duke Jean heir to Luxembourg. 1970,1980 and 1983. Constitutional reforms by stages; Belgium is not any more one State unit, but a composition of two communities (Flemings and Walloons) and of three areas (Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels). |
